Seismic Refraction

Seismic refraction techniques measure the travel-time of seismic waves refracted at interfaces between subsurface layers with contrasting velocity. Excel operates a 24 channel seismic system equipped with a hammer or weight-drop energy source. Excel has performed several seismic refraction tomography surveys for the engineering and mining industries. Such surveys include depth to bedrock or overburden layers studies and determination of soil and rock properties, faults and fracture zones.

Applications:

  • Locating and mapping bedrock structures
  • Determination of the water table
  • Locating buried channels
  • Determining weathering zones

Advantages:

  • Low-cost
  • Highly productive
  • Non-intrusive
  • Environmentally friendly
